Abstract:

The past two years have seen important milestones for the nascent geothermal industry in Canada. FutEra Power in Alberta is on track to deliver the first geothermal power in Canada since electricity was generated at Mount Meager, British Columbia in 1984. DEEP Earth Energy Corp. in Saskatchewan has moved forward on completing their FEED study based on the drilling of five wells, the Fort Nelson First Nation’s Clarke Lake geothermal project in British Columbia has a rig on site, and Alberta No. 1 in its namesake province has secured a site and well licence to spud in Q3 of this year. These three projects have all secured funding through the Emerging Renewable Power Program, funded by Canada’s Federal Department of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). Against this backdrop of power projects, NRCan has announced a second program, SREPs – Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program, that will support “Canada’s transition to a clean, electrified economy by investing in projects that will provide more clean, affordable electricity options available and help Canada achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.” Government funding of research projects continues in Nunavut, Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia, and research groups continue to obtain funding through various sources including Canada’s Natural Science and Engineering Research Council that supports several active groups.
