Under Our Clean Future, the Government of Yukon is prioritizing renewable energy solutions and clean alternatives like geothermal to help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and meet the Yukon’s energy needs.
The legislation will outline the rules and procedures for how the exploration and development of geothermal resources can occur in an environmentally sustainable way.
Through important research from the Yukon Geological Survey and First Nations governments, we know geothermal energy has potential to provide a secure and clean energy source for Yukon communities. Through Our Clean Future, our government is committed to exploring and regulating geothermal resources, and with this request for public feedback, we are continuing to move towards our goal. This legislation will increase access to much-needed energy and build our green economy. It will also ensure exploration and development is done responsibly.
Minister Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker
Quick facts
The Yukon currently does not have legislation to administer and regulate geothermal resource exploration and development projects.
Our Clean Future outlines a commitment (Action E11) to create a Geothermal Resources Act.
Geothermal energy is a renewable resource that, where present, can be developed and used for both small- and large-scale energy needs.
Although related, shallow ground-source heat exchange systems will be outside the scope of this new legislation.
