Hosted by Project Innerspace at Pivot2023 — September 20, 2023
Speakers
Roman Shor, PhD
Associate Professor and Energi Simulation Industrial Research Chair in Geothermal Systems, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Calgary. He is the director of the Energi Simulation Centre for Geothermal Systems Research and an instructor in the Sustainable Energy Development MSc program. He is interested in energy systems, the interplay of renewable and traditional energy sources, systems thinking, and sustainability. His research interests lie in the areas of drillstring dynamics modelling and control, drilling optimization and drilling systems automation. Specifically, the application of reduced-order modelling and modelling for control to enable model predictive control for drilling tasks and drilling optimization through data processing and machine learning. His collaborative research projects include an investigation of fluid rheology with applications to drilling fluids, magnetorheological fluids and their applications, hydraulic fracture placement optimization, and applications of seismic processing methods to drillstring imaging. Finally, he is also active in the areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence with particular attention to applications in the energy industry.
Kirsten Marcia
The founder of DEEP and its President and CEO. Kirsten is a geology graduate from the University of Saskatchewan and a Professional Geoscientist, registered in the Province of Saskatchewan. She has worked in the exploration industry for 20 years for commodities including diamonds, gold and base metals, coal, uranium, and oil and gas. Her past experience was focused in Saskatchewan and Alberta for Canadian TSX-listed companies including the position of Vice President of Exploration for Wescan Goldfields Inc., a Saskatchewan gold and coal exploration company; Director of Investor Relations for Vena Resources, a Peruvian mining company; and Exploration Manager for Shore Gold Inc., a Saskatchewan diamond exploration and development company. Kirsten considers herself a resource entrepreneur who has participated in the formation and early-stage development of Saskatchewan resource companies.
Jeff Messner
The President and Co-founder of Novus Earth. He is responsible for the design of the innovative closed loop geothermal technology and is actively growing the company in the clean energy space. Through valuing environmental stewardship, he has spearheaded a renewable energy technology with net-zero emissions that opens up new markets in the energy and agricultural sectors. His previous work at Weatherford Drilling Services in technical sales has been an integral part of his ability to develop client relationships built on trust. Through effective project management of over 20 companies, he had attained $25 million per year in sales. Jeff has a strong technical background in directional drilling from over a decade of experience in his roles as a Field Specialist and Field Supervisor. Jeff is a lifelong learner that is constantly reading to get ahead of market trends, attending conferences, and most recently obtained his Renewable Energy & Conservation Certification. His ability to build strong relationships is a natural skill he started developing on the golf course over the past couple decades, as he dedicates his time to maintaining long term relationships in his personal and professional life.
Lisa Mueller
She is educated as a mechanical engineer with over 20 years of technical and business development experience. Lisa began her career in the space sciences on a NASA project, then moved into the commercial arena by founding and growing her own manufacturing company. Most recently, she served as Senior Business Development Manager of Infrastructure at Shell Canada and President & CEO at Epoch Energy Development. Lisa joined Razor Energy in 2017 as Vice President New Ventures. In response to the global energy complex embracing a lower-carbon future, Razor Energy created a wholly owned subsidiary, FutEra Power. In 2023, the Alberta Investment Management Corporation, or AIMCo, purchased a majority stake in FutEra. As President and CEO of FutEra Power, Lisa aims to leverage Alberta’s current energy assets to develop a cleaner energy tomorrow, beginning with Canada’s first operating co-produced geothermal power plant.
